Diva Challenge #186

Okay, so you know when you start working on a project and halfway through you step back and say, "Um, who did this?"  In contrast to the clean, restrained pictures I've made for the last few weeks, this one went all wacky on me.

First, I had an hour to start the challenge, and I didn't have a circular tile.  That's right, I'm now the girl who was asked to bring brownies but shows up with chips and salsa.  Then, I didn't like my leaves, and I vowed to use only three tangles but I couldn't get enough contrast and then I had to continue the tile in the early morning hours before work and so my tile is all, "I was drawn by a crazy person."

There you have it.  What I could use (if you feel like commenting) is some constructive criticism on how to make the busy tiles look right.  You know, some of my most favorite tiles done by NOT ME are full of different designs and ups and downs and movement and, well, wackiness.  But they look RIGHT.  So give me comments like, "Don't put those two designs next to each other because blabla..." and things like that.  And if you don't want to deal with it, I don't blame you.  I wouldn't either.

Ok, You might think that it looks wacky, but I quite like it. Sometimes when this happens with my work, I go back in and really boost the shading values darker in a few areas to lift up, and push things back. I had an instructor once you used to jokingly tell us, "It's the values, stupid." that has always stuck with me when something isn't working quite right, to look for that. Hope this helps for what it's worth!

Firstly - I love your drawing. It has a modern look to it, with a lot of places and things to look at.

For example - I love the "spirals in the dark", which seems to float in space. Beautiful.

I also like your invitation to provide "advice". Unfortunately I'm learning myself, so I can't help much.

Your bold lines helps with some separation but before I read Kate's comments I was thinking the same thing.

I like it too. I think you have nicely balanced patterns such as knightsbridege. I like phicops in the middle. I don't feel competent enough to advise either.

Sorry that I don't agree with you; I loved this tile the moment I saw it. The dark lines separates the tangles very well. The whole has a fresh look over it. Maybe you have to let is rest for a day or so and then look at it again to like it.
Anyway, i LOVE it!!!

I think you will like it better later. I agree with Kate. You have bold lines so it can take bold shading (not overall, but the shading you add can be fairly dark and try not to over blend it. That what I'd try anyway, if I changed anything at all. Give it a couple days then decide.

Thanks for all of the suggestions...funny enough, I did go back to it and like it a lot better a few weeks later! I might work on the shading at some time, but weird how your perspective can change. :)
